Major

Main content start
Class Spotlight! AA 126 Aerospace Prototyping Lab. This course is focused on developing practical skills in designing, building, and testing aerospace systems. Practical laboratory exercises will introduce students to tools and diagnostics used in software, electronics, and mechanical design relevant to spacecraft, aircraft, structural testing, and robotics.

Stanford freshmen and sophomores who want to pursue Aeronautics and Astronautics should follow the course plan prescribed in the Stanford Bulletin. Taking the appropriate math, physics, and computer science courses in the early years will be a great help throughout the undergraduate program.

Tips for Freshmen

Join Stanford Student Space Initiative, or Stanford Flight Club. We strongly encourage all students interested in majoring in Aero/Astro to join SSI or Stanford Flight club to gain valuable hands-on project experience earlier in your academic career before the capstone courses senior year.

IntroSems

Aero/Astro IntroSems offer a small, hands-on way to explore aerospace, meet faculty, and ‘test-drive’ the major before you declare.

Instructions for declaring major in Aeronautics & Astronautics

1. Download the Aero/Astro Program Sheet from the School of Engineering web site. Please include courses you plan to take as well as those you have already taken. If you plan on applying AP or IB credit to your program, confirm credits in MAP, or you may review the School of Engineering Transfers-Ap-Exceptions webpage.

2. Complete the program sheet and declare the Aero/Astrro Major on Axess! Then email Aero/Astro Student Services Specialist Jenny Scholes to assign you an Aero/Astro faculty member to be your advisor.

3. Meet with your faculty advisor to go over your program sheet. Have your Aero/Astro faculty advisor electronically sign your program sheet.

Research Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

The main research opportunity for undergraduate students is applying for our summer REU program, more about that HERE. Please also explore these other opportunities for research.

Enroll in AA 199

Students may enroll in an independent study course like AA 199 to work on a research project under faculty member for elective credit towards their major. Please email faculty directly if you are interested in enrolling in an AA 199 with them to see what projects are available in their lab that quarter.

Explore Independent Undergraduate Research Grants

Major Grant: get support for a full-time immersive Summer project (priority given to Juniors). Most Major Grants are awarded to students beginning an honors thesis. Explore Major Grants

Small Grant: get support for a part-time project year-round. Students interested in applying for a Small Grant should connect with their Faculty Mentor regarding their proposed project. Explore Small Grants

Conference Grants: Get support for a scholarly conference you have been accepted to. Conference Grants support students who have been accepted to *present* their own projects at professional or scholarly convenings (e.g., academic conference) Explore Conference Grants

Utilize Skilling Laboratory

The Stanford Aeronautics & Astronautics Skilling Laboratory provides space and a community of practice for Aeronautics & Astronautics students to ideate, create, and make to develop technical, creative, and practical skills. Access to the space is only for Aeronautics & Astronautics students enrolled in Aeronautics & Astronautics courses. Skilling also offers the chance to work on independent maker projects monthly during its Open Lab Days. For more information visit the Skilling Lab website.

4. Email the signed program sheet to Aero/Astro Student Services Specialist Jenny Scholes.
