Course assistantships for Aero/Astro courses,
and for Engineering courses taught by Aero/Astro faculty, are
assigned through the Aero/Astro Student Services Office. Preference
is given to Aero/Astro students, particularly to those in their
first year of PhD study (typically, their "quals"
year). In general, only students who have recently taken and
excelled in a course are eligible to assist in it.
To apply, please complete the 2008-09
Aero/Astro Course Assistantship Application Form and attach
a copy of your (unofficial) Stanford transcript. Submit the
form to Aero/Astro Student Services, Durand Building, room 250.
Deadline for consideration in "first round"
Course Assistantship offers is Friday, June 20, 2008.
Initial offers will be announced in July. Additional
offers will be made if a student turns down a CA offer, or if
more courses are authorized for CA support. For this purpose,
your initial application is kept on file all year. New applicants
may apply at any time.
Specific course assignments will be announced approximately
one month before the start of each quarter. Please
notify AA Student Services immediately if your plans or funding
change and you wish to WITHDRAW from consideration for CA positions.
All International students need a special teaching-related
language clearance (a "TA-OK") from the English for
Foreign Students department. Please obtain this clearance
before the end of Spring Quarter 2008. For information about
the exam, and to schedule a test, see
http://www.stanford.edu/group/efs/tascreen.html
.
Even students whose first language is English
must have a "pass" recorded in the University database
if they are here on an F1/J1 visa. Contact the EFS office to
make the appropriate arrangements without exam.
Students whose first language is not English
are encouraged to take the exam EARLY, and also to consider
taking Linguistics 692, Speaking and Teaching in English (3
units). This is offered in summer, and can be excellent Quals
preparation as well.
A course assistantship is a form of student employment.
As part of the student's academic training and development,
he or she is paid for services assisting a faculty member in
the teaching of a course.
A 50% CA works 20 hours per week (on average)
for a 3-month appointment. The CA receives:
*8-10 units of tuition (paid directly to University) - requires
enrollment in at least 8 units
*Student health insurance subsidy (paid directly in 4th week
of the quarter) - req. enrollment
*Salary (paid semi-monthly through payroll. Federal and state
taxes are withheld)

Aero/Astro salary rates, for 2008-09: 50% CA
= $1,204 per pay period ($7,224/quarter)
CA appointments for fewer hours earn proportionally
less tuition and salary.
Stanford housing, etc., is NOT automatically paid
from your assistantship salary. If you want these charges to
be paid directly from payroll instead of your having to write
a check at the beginning of the quarter, you must REQUEST this
through Student
Financial Services.
